Tommy Kuhl in field of prestigious Junior InvitationalJournal Star, Peoria, Ill. — Journal Star, Peoria, Ill.
April 16--Tommy Kuhl of Morton is one of 54 elite amateur golfers invited to play this week in the prestigious Junior Invitational at Sage Valley, often referred to as the Masters of junior golf.
The 54-hole event, featuring amateurs from 19 countries, tees off Thursday at the Sage Valley Golf Club in Graniteville, S.C. The golfers compete for the "gold jacket" in the three-day tournament.
Notable players in the field include 15th-ranked Rayham Thomas of India, 50th-ranked Benjamin Jones of England and No. 56 Canon Claycomb of Kentucky.
Kuhl, the two-time Class 2A Illinois state champion who shattered the state's all-time best one-day and two-day scores at last fall's state tournament, is ranked 1,859th among the world's amateurs. He is headed to a golf career at the University of Illinois.
Kuhl will be rooming on site in a cabin with future Illinois teammate, Adrien Dumont de Chassart of Belgium, the first player ever from that country to play in the event.
Events each night include the Opening Dinner, which in the past has featured Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player as speakers.
Another highlight of the week is Nike Night, where Nike brings a surprise guest to spend the evening with the golfers. Past Nike Night guests include Tiger Woods (2016), Jason Day (2017) and Rory McIlroy (2015).
