College football projected win totals: Michigan 8.5, Michigan State 7.5

Detroit Free Press — Brian Manzullo Detroit Free Press

May 17--Can you smell the college football in the air yet?

Okay, maybe not. It's not even summer yet. But we do have projected win totals from at least one oddsmaker, and it may or may not stir up some conversation and debate among Michiganders.

BetOnline.ag has released the over-under for opening college football win totals, with defending champion Alabama at the top at 10.5.

But what's interesting, as it pertains to us, is Michigan football at 8.5 wins ... and Michigan State football at 7.5.

Michigan State is coming off a 10-3 season, including a win over Washington State in the Holiday Bowl, and returns almost every starter in 2018. And it beat Michigan 14-10 in Ann Arbor, coach Mark Dantonio's second win against U-M coach Jim Harbaugh in three seasons.

Meanwhile, U-M went 8-5 last season, but enters this fall with its own slew of returning starters (including 9 on defense), a promising transfer quarterback in Shea Patterson and another round of hype, with many expecting a step up despite a brutal schedule this fall.

Other notable Big Ten over-under win totals: Ohio State at 9.5, Penn State at 9.5 and Wisconsin at 9.5.
